February 19, 2008 – here!, America's premium gay television network, is pleased to announce that it will be teaming with the Academy of Television Art & Sciences to air the 11th annual "Ribbon of Hope Celebration." The ceremony, which was taped in December, is set to debut on the network on Friday, March 7th.
In an event that honors and promotes excellence in cause awareness, the night's events pay homage to 'television with conscience.' Its purpose is to honor media programs, producers and individuals who strive to provide HIV/AIDS awareness. Originally named after the iconic red ribbon that has become a symbol of the fight against HIV, the "Ribbon of Hope Celebration" will be airing on here! Networks for its second consecutive year.
Taped on December 1st – in commemoration of World AIDS Day – at the Television Academy's Leanord Goldensen Theater in North Hollywood, the show featured a red carpet with a who's-who of celebrities gathered together to bring light to this worthy cause. Presenters at the ceremony included names from film and stage such as Judith Light, Jasmine Guy, Jack Coleman, Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp.
Among the projects honored were "Life Support," an HBO film starring Queen Latifah about an HIV-positive Brooklyn woman named Ana, who uses her energy and regrets about past mistakes to help give back to the community; the film "3 Needles," a view of the HIV crisis related via 3 vastly different stories that all trace back to a common theme and starring Lucy Liu, Stockard Channing and Chloe Sevigny; and "Girl Positive," the Lifetime movie, about a high school girl's hook-up with an HIV-positive boy and starring Jennie Garth and Andrea Bowen.
"The Ribbon of Hope Celebration is one of the single most important events we produce at here! Networks. Not only is it an honor to work with the Academy of Television Art & Sciences on such a significant program, but it is also vital that we recognize and honor those in the entertainment community whose dedication and commitment to cause awareness, education and action through program excellence continues to help eradicate this deadly disease," said Paul Colichman, Founder and CEO of here! Networks.
here! is proud to be airing the "Ribbon of Hope Celebration" for another year and hopes to continue its efforts to support portrayals in television that give voice and shed light to HIV awareness. It is in conjunction with here!'s continued attempt to encourage societal attention toward issues that not only stimulate the consciousness of the gay and lesbian community but that also impact the health and improvement of our society as a whole.
