LOS ANGELES, CA – July 18, 2006 - here! Films, the theatrical distribution and worldwide sales division of here! Networks, America's premium gay television network, has acquired the exciting new documentary Mr. Leather directed by first-time filmmaker Jason Garrett. The film, which chronicles 9 men and their aspirations of being crowned Mr. Los Angeles Leather, comes to here! Networks after its sold-out engagement at L.A.'s Outfest, as well as successful screenings at the Chicago Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and the Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Mr. Leather will open in select theatres nationwide in 2007.
"here! Films is excited to acquire this compelling and amusing piece of work," said Mark Reinhart, Executive Vice President of Distribution and Acquisitions for here! Films. "Jason Garrett is an extraordinary young talent," he added.
Mr. Leather is the unforgettable account of the exotic and misinterpreted underground gay subculture of Leather Contests. Dubbing itself "American Idol Goes Leather," the film traces the progress of 9 men as they enter the 2003 Mr. Los Angeles Leather competition, taking us into their homes, offices and relationships—with equal amounts of sincerity and raw humor—as the competition draws closer. But before the contestants take the stage to see who will be crowned Mr. Los Angeles Leather, filmmaker Garrett intends on humanizing a subculture interested in leather and sexual fetishes, as told through the voices of sex experts, psychologists, doctors, and authors.
Director/Producer Jason Garrett makes his documentary filmmaking debut with Mr. Leather. No stranger to the film industry, Garrett's credits include various music videos, commercials and films. Born in England, the filmmaker has lived in the United States since the age of 20, and settled in Los Angeles in the early 90s to pursue his career. In addition to his work on Mr. Leather, Garrett currently serves as Head of Post Production for Planet Grande Pictures, a small Malibu-based independent production company focusing on reality-based programming.
"Mr. Leather has had enormous success on the festival circuit, and here! films is absolutely the right company to take the film to the next level," says Garrett. "I'm proud to be involved with here! Films and am delighted that they understand the potential this film has to appeal to a wide audience."
