Created by the experimental company Split Pillow, Brushfires is the work of seven directors who built the film in the old parlor tradition of Exquisite Corpse. Each director took a line from the same poem by Jessica Wilbur and created a short piece based on the line after watching only the section of the film that would air chronologically before their own. Then, the pieces were linked together to form the completed movie which tells the story of Cat, a laid-back girl in love with her hipster roommate whose path takes an unexpected twist when an unbalanced heiress enters her life. The seven directors are Wendy Jo Carlton, Ai Lene Chor, Maria Gigante, Laura Lonigro, Amber Mohammed, Aprill Winney and Etta Worthington.
